FUKUSHIMA, Japan — Officials from the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced that contaminated groundwater is leaking from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, according to The Verge.
Two years ago a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan causing many issues with radioactive wastewater being spilled into the ocean.
TEPCO has acknowledged that there is a leak but believes it is confined to the man-made harbor surrounding the plant, noted the article.
Before recent analysis, TEPCO failed to recognize the presence of a leak despite independent findings of elevated radiation levels in the nearby seawater.
