MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A report released by national environmental groups says rivers and lakes are being polluted with toxins by coal-fired power plants, according to The Birmingham News.
Some lakes and rivers in Alabama reportedly have been found to include toxins in ash and sludge.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been requested by these groups to impose new regulations to eliminate or reduce the pollution, stated the article.
Alabama Power Company and the Tennessee Valley Authority are two companies brought into question in the report, “Closing the Floodgates: How the Coal Industry is Poisoning Our Water and How We Can Stop It,” which was released by the Environmental Integrity Project, The Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, Earthjustice and Waterkeeper Alliance.
