CHICAGO — The Clean Water Initiative, developed by the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) working with the legislator and Gov. Quinn’s administration, was signed into law by Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn, according to a press release.
While aiding to make Illinois communities’ wastewater, stormwater and drinking water infrastructures better equipped to deal with possible effects of climate change, the newly signed legislation also provides financial support to improve these infrastructures overall, stated the release.
Possible change in climate can cause extreme rainfalls intermingled with extended periods of dry conditions, ultimately lowering Illinois communities’ water supplies, making this legislation a much-needed solution to the possibility of damaging water loss, continued the release.
“As climate continues to warp our weather, Illinois needs to encourage communities to make their water infrastructure more resilient to both extreme precipitation and drought,” said NRDC Senior Policy Analyst Rob Moore in the release. “The bill Gov. Quinn signs will help communities’ water infrastructure meet the changing demands of the future using new strategies that bring real bang for the buck like green infrastructure and water efficiency.”
