EPA supplies grants for environmental stewardship projects in Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The grants will be awarded to Calvin College and the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — EPA announced that two grants amounting to more than $200,000 have been awarded to Calvin College and the Great Lakes Fishery Trust for environmental stewardship projects in Michigan, according to a press release.

Calvin College will receive a $60,000 urban waters grant for restoration work along two Grand River tributaries, the Plaster Creek and Rogue River, and the grant will also fund the designing of green infrastructure, as well as the training of high school students to install and maintain green infrastructure projects, stated the release.

A $150,000 environmental education grant will be awarded to the Great Lakes Fishery Trust to support Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative programs for nine regional hubs around Michigan, continues the release. This initiative program has involved more than 55,000 students in grade school and high school, to provide stewardship opportunities throughout the state.

“These EPA grants will provide opportunities for young people to learn about the Great Lakes and to work on projects to restore urban waterways,” said EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman. “In Grand Rapids, high school students will have opportunities for hands-on job training — to build green infrastructure that will reduce runoff and improve water quality in the Grand River watershed.”
