APWA announces Abel Wolman Award winner

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Abel Wolman Award is presented each year by APWA’s Public Works Historical Society and recognizes the best new book published in the field of public works history.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dr. David Soll, an assistant professor for the Watershed Institute for Collaborative Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received the American Public Works Association (APWA) Abel Wolman Award at its 2014 International Public Works Congress & Exposition in Toronto, Canada, according to a press release.

The Abel Wolman Award, established in 1987, is presented each year by APWA’s Public Works Historical Society and recognizes the best new book published in the field of public works history, stated the release.

The release reported that Dr. Soll’s book, “Empire of Water: An Environmental and Political History of the New York Water Supply,” delves into the history of New York City’s water system from the late 19th century to the early 21st century, focusing on the geographical, environmental and political repercussions of the city’s search for more water.

The book was selected for the award by a committee of public works professionals and scholars, noted the release.

“I am truly honored that ‘Empire of Water’ was selected as the 2014 recipient of the Abel Wolman Award,” said Dr. Soll. “When I review the list of previous winners, it’s clear that I am in excellent company.”
