LENEXA, Kan. — EPA announced plans to hold its second annual SepticSmart Week during Sept. 22-26, according to a press release.

The release reported that approximately 25 percent of all U.S. households depend on septic systems to treat their wastewater and failure to maintain a septic system can lead to back-ups and overflows, which can result in costly repairs, polluted local waterways and risks to public health and the environment.
“When homeowners protect their septic systems it’s good for their health, their neighbors’ health and their pocketbooks,” said Ken Kopocis, deputy assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Water.
