STUART, Fla. — The American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) of Stuart, Florida, and National Water Research Institute (NWRI) of Fountain Valley, California, announced the 2014 AMTA-NWRI Fellowship for Membrane Technology has been awarded to doctoral students Ariel Atkinson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Erin Partlan of Clemson University, according to a press release.
The joint fellowship provides $10,000 a year for two years to support graduate research pertaining to NWRI’s objective to protect public health and the environment, improve water quality and create safe, new sources of water, as well as AMTA’s vision statement to solve water supply and quality issues through the widespread application of membrane technology, stated the release.
Both recipients are conducting graduate-level research projects focused on membrane fouling, in which particles and other constituents in water stick to and obstruct membranes used as part of the water treatment process, reported the release.
Atkinson and Partlan will attend the 2015 AMTA-AWWA Membrane Technology Conference and Exposition in March 2015 in Orlando, Florida, to present their fellowship-funded graduate research and will each receive a plaque at the Awards Luncheon, noted the release.
