ATLANTA — EPA announced construction of a groundwater treatment system will soon be underway at the Smalley-Piper Superfund Site in Collierville, Tennessee, according to a press release.
Land clearing and other site preparation activities are currently underway, and the treatment plant building will be constructed during December followed by the installation of the treatment equipment in January 2015, stated the release.
The release reported that the treatment system is projected to be in operation by March 2015 and will initially operate for one year, then EPA will evaluate the system’s performance and determine the next steps.
The cleanup, funded by EPA, will be managed by Black & Veatch, an EPA contractor, and performed by a group of subcontractors, continued the release.
Chemical reduction and precipitation followed by ion exchange are included in the groundwater treatment to remove total chromium and hexavalent chromium, noted the release.
