Construction of EchoWater Project to kick off with official groundbreaking event

SAN FRANCISCO — The event will take place May 28 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

SAN FRANCISCO — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that EPA Region 9 Administrator Jared Blumenfeld will join local, state and federal officials and stakeholders at an official groundbreaking to start construction of the EchoWater Project located in Elk Grove, California, according to a press release.

The $2 billion project will bring the Sacramento region’s wastewater treatment plant to tertiary treatment levels to meet new requirements for the state to remove nitrates and ammonia, along with filtration and enhanced disinfection before discharge to the Sacramento River, stated the release.

The project’s funding has been secured through low-interest funding from California’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund, which is the "largest single block of financing ever issued to project under the state’s revolving program,” reported the release.

The state’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund will help reduce interest-related costs by around half a billion dollars during the lifespan of the loan, providing long-term savings to ratepayers, continued the release.

The groundbreaking event will take place May 28 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, noted the release.
