CDM Smith to design and build industrial wastewater pretreatment system for Lubrizol

CDM Smith was selected by The Lubrizol Corporation, a specialty chemicals company, to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for a $16 million industrial wastewater pretreatment system at Lubrizol’s Deer Park, Texas, facility. The project supports a larger expansion at the facility where Lubrizol is building a new Polyisobutylene unit. CDM Smith’s team is tasked with installing pretreatment upgrades to treat wastewater streams from existing and future manufacturing operations. These upgrades include two new American Petroleum Institute oil-water separators, a screening system, one stormwater surge tank, a new process lift station and sludge/slop oil tanks, as well as upgrades to an existing lift station.

LG Sonic systems installed in UK nuclear power plant for algae control

To improve water visibility in storage ponds at Sellafield, a nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear decommissioning site, four LG Sonic Industrial Wet systems were installed. The systems have 12 ultrasonic programs to effectively control different types of algae and are able to treat algae in a relatively short time. GPRS control allows the user to monitor and change the ultrasound program remotely. Status updates and alerts are received when power outages occur.

After three weeks of the installation of the LG Sonic ultrasonic systems, there was a significant reduction in blue-green algae count and chlorophyll levels. As a result of the reduction in algae levels, the water started to clear, and it was possible to see vessels and containers in the storage ponds that in recent years were only visible when using a tethered underwater mobile device.

GZA expands team

GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., a multidisciplinary firm that focuses on environmental, geotechnical, ecological, water and construction management services, added two new members to its team.

Barry Stuedemann, P.E., PWS, DECI, has joined the firm as an associate principal. Based out of GZA’s Oak Brook, Illinois, office, Stuedemann will be responsible for natural resources consulting and engineering focusing on wetland assessments, delineations and permitting; tree and biological habitat surveys and habitat restoration; and stormwater management and green infrastructure engineering. Stuedemann is an environmental scientist and engineer with experience in bridging environmental science, engineering, compliance, management and policy disciplines. His expertise ranges from analysis of environmental risk, opportunity, impact and mitigation to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) clearances to environmental due diligence and compliance and relationship building with local, state and federal agencies. Stuedemann earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Chicago. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Illinois Association of Environmental Professionals, Illinois Association of Floodplain and Stormwater Management, American Public Works Association, and the Society of Wetland Scientists.

GZA also added Mary Brittain to the team as an environmental senior project manager in GZA’s Springfield, Massachusetts, office. Brittain has more than 19 years of experience in the environmental consulting field. She has performed environmental work for individuals, private industry, institutions of higher learning, utilities and municipalities in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York.  She brings technical and regulatory expertise to GZA. Brittain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in geology from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and is licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup Professionals as a Licensed Site Professional (LSP).  She is a member of the Licensed Site Professional Association (LSPA) and has been appointed to the Lee Agricultural Commission and the Massachusetts Water Infrastructure Advisory Committee.
