AUSTIN, TX, Nov. 9, 2005 -- Emerson Process Management has supplied over 1,500 Rosemount® pressure and temperature transmitters for use in the Sakhalin II offshore oil and gas production project in the Sea of Okhotsk. Situated in Russia's far east, Sakhalin Island, North of Japan, experiences environmental conditions which provide a challenge to measurement instrumentation, with extremes of ambient temperature (from -45 to +40°C) and wide daily changes. These harsh conditions led the main contractors for the offshore platforms and the onshore treatment facilities to specify Rosemount transmitters.
London–based AMEC, the main contractor for the offshore platform production control systems, selected high reliability Rosemount pressure and temperature instrumentation from Emerson to meet the specification for both Phase 2 platforms, the Lunskoye platform LUN-A and the Piltun Astokhskoye PA-B platform. Approximately 500 Rosemount pressure transmitters are being supplied, some with chemical seals and some with integral manifolds. Most of the 350 Rosemount temperature transmitter assemblies will be supplied complete with special Shell-designed thermowells.
Similar specifications and environmental conditions were required for the instrumentation at the onshore processing facility, where WorleyParsons is responsible. Again Emerson has supplied approximately 500 Rosemount 3051 family pressure transmitters, most complete with chemical seals, and 300 Rosemount 644 temperature transmitters, complete with thermowells. Much of this instrumentation will use Foundation™ fieldbus communications, allowing control room access to the diagnostics and predictive maintenance capability available from these intelligent transmitters.
Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) was formed in 1994 to develop the Piltun Astokhskoye (PA) field and the Lunskoye field off the north east coast of Sakhalin Island, in the Sea of Okhotsk. SEIC is the Shell-led operating company, working in a Production Sharing Agreement with the Russian Government.
Phase I of the Sakhalin II project was the first offshore oil development in Russia. Oil production from Phase I has been limited to the summer season, as in the north- during winter months- sea ice prevents the shuttle tankers reaching the platform. The multi-billion dollar Sakhalin II Phase 2 Project is an integrated oil and gas development that includes the construction of an onshore processing facility linked to the offshore production platforms, and an 800km pipeline to transport the resulting oil and gas to the export terminal in the largely ice free southern extremities of Sakhalin Island.
