Environment-friendly and fail-safe manufacturing with new automation system

ERLANGEN, Germany, Dec. 12, 2005 -- The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order from Stora Enso to modernize the automation system of boiler 2 in Hylte Mill. Simatic PCS7 will be used as the control system. The new equipment will replace the old systems of different manufacturers. After modernization, the plant will have a uniform and all-inclusive automation system. This will facilitate operator control, increase fail-safety and make the installation more environment-friendly. Modification of the boiler is scheduled to be completed during spring 2006.

The Stora Enso Group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of paper and paperboard. In 2004, the company employed around 45,000 people in over 40 countries. In Hyltebruk in the south of Sweden, Hylte Mill has produced newsprint since 1972. Present capacity is 810,000 metric tons per year. At the present time, boiler 2, including the fuel handling, flue-gas purification and steam systems, is being subjected to a comprehensive process of modernization. The aim is to reduce emission of carbon dioxide and NOx and to comply with new EU regulations.

Siemens is supplying the control and automation systems. The control system, which is based on Simatic PCS7 and on S7-400 controllers, will replace a heterogeneous automation environment which was installed in the 1980s and which includes Siemens products as well as components from other manufacturers. The data of around 2800 input and output addresses have to be processed. To a large extent, the existing engineering will be migrated so that valuable knowledge of the plant will be retained. As a result, Stora Enso will have a uniform and all-inclusive system platform for all open-loop and closed-loop control tasks after completion of the conversion work. The boiler control system - from the server and processors to the process interface - has a redundant design. This will increase fail-safety and therefore the plant's availability.

Several operator stations and an engineering station are also part of the scope of supply. In addition to distributed operator stations for sub-processes, a central operator station will be installed. From here, it will be possible to monitor and control the whole process. This will facilitate the work of the operating personnel. Another new feature will be the alarm management system implemented by Siemens. This will ensure that fault messages are displayed immediately at the correct operator station. The operators will therefore always be kept up to date on unusual plant status and will therefore be able to quickly make the decisions needed to rectify the faults.

The main reasons for the contract being awarded to Siemens were the convincing migration concept and the many years of good cooperation between Stora Enso Hylte and Siemens. It was only in July 2005 that Siemens had been given an order to equip paper machine PM4 with new direct-current drives.
