CA outfall tunnel nears completion, Parsons to provide final design services

A new outfall tunnel project is nearing completion in the city of Carson, Calif., with Parsons to provide its final design services.

PASADENA, CA, July 24, 2013 -- A new outfall tunnel project is nearing completion in the city of Carson, Calif. The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel program is a 7-mi long, 18-ft diameter channel that will transfer treated wastewater from the JWPCP to an existing outfall.

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County has selected Parsons to provide final design services for the tunnel and connection facilities on the project. The final design will include tunneling, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control engineering services. Additional services will include cost estimating and construction scheduling. Further, the channel will allow for inspection and repairs of the two existing effluent tunnels, which flow full every day and haven't been inspected in more than 50 years.

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County service more than 5.3 million people and operate a number of facilities that collect, treat, recycle, and dispose of wastewater and industrial wastes.
