GREENVILLE, SC, Jan. 5, 2011 -- Utility Partners of America (UPA), one of the nation's largest utility solutions providers, has been awarded a contract from Itron to deploy a substantial water meter automation project for the Cleveland Division of Water. The initiative will represent more than 425,000 smart meter connections.

UPA specializes in the installation of smart meters, in-home devices, electric vehicle charging stations, and fixed network-based systems, such as the one being introduced in Cleveland. Over a three-year period, UPA will install Itron's ChoiceConnect™ 100W water modules in the City of Cleveland and surrounding communities. Through its state-of-the-art call center, UPA will also provide technical and customer support throughout the deployment, including advance scheduling and inquiry response.

UPA will manage an installation workforce comprised primarily of locally-recruited individuals, and will be working with three local installation contractors who will receive extensive training on the specific water meter technology deployed, as well as safety and customer service. "The scope of this initiative will generate a significant hiring need for Cleveland professionals and will provide investment into the marketplace through the local Cleveland contractors," said Mike Cale, UPA's chief executive officer. "We're thrilled to partner with Itron and assist with the delivery of this deployment."

The initiative represents one of the largest water meter installation programs in North America.
