Welcome to the March/April edition of Industrial WaterWorld magazine. Unconventional oil and gas - specifically hydraulic fracturing - is the focus of this month’s feature article. The last few years have seen a contraction in hydraulic fracturing activity, forcing producers to tighten capital spending and scale back water management programs. But as our correspondent Jeff Gunderson explains here, water management in the sector is poised for some exciting growth as new opportunities emerge, driven in large part by more environmental regulation.

Here, continuing with the hydraulic fracturing theme, Bosque Systems discusses the importance of monitoring and control with regard to water reuse projects. In light of myriad challenges such as water scarcity, disposal constraints, and the high variability of incoming water quality, a clear and effective water reuse plan can help oil producers find ways to economically capture, treat and reuse as much water as possible.

For plants considering zero liquid discharge (ZLD) to meet Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELGs) for flue gas desulfurization wastewater, finding the right approach is critical. The article hereoffers some guidelines for getting to ZLD, including a case study that illustrates how one client was able to achieve success and address future permit compliance, including a probable boron limit.

There are many options for treating produced water for discharge or reuse in the oil and gas industry, and hereyou’ll learn about the Hydrophilic Fiber Ball Filtration System, which features media in two forms - fiber balls or fiber filter cartridges - that have been chemically modified with oleophobic and/or oleophilic properties to filter contaminants and allow reuse of captured oil.
