Welcome to the May/June edition of Industrial WaterWorld magazine. This month’s feature article takes a look at the manufacturing industry and how wastewater treatment and reuse are becoming major priorities in the face of mounting cost pressures and tougher environmental regulations. But it’s not just about meeting requirements, as Jeff Gunderson explains here, it’s also about delivering more value.
Here, Barry Millar tackles the topic of water reuse - particularly rainwater harvesting and graywater recycling - in the industrial sector. He explores why water reuse has largely struggled with wide adoption and outlines what he believes are key considerations for breaking down barriers.
The U.S. EPA updated the Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG) standards for Steam Electric Generating Units in late 2015 and just a few weeks ago, in early June 2017, the agency issued a proposed rule to postpone certain compliance dates. Regardless of whether these recent actions revise or delay implementation, it’s important to understand how the operation of a wet flue gas desulfurization system can impact the quality of the wastewater that’s generated. Here, Bryan Hansen and Corey Kipp discuss FGD chemistry and the impact of various operating parameters.
Here, Sreekumar Janardhnan shares a produced water treatment case study out of British Columbia. Here, an energy producer tested compact high-rate technologies for hydraulic fracturing flowback water that would effectively allow the producer to treat and reuse through a centralized “water hub” to lower the cost of water supply and waste disposal while enhancing environmental stewardship.
In order to tap into the expanding market for its craft beers, Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Company expanded its facilities with a new fermentation cellar and an on-site wastewater treatment system. The brewer took great care to protect its new equalization basin and wet well from corrosion with a coating solution from Tnemec. Read more here.
