GE started a busy week of announcements expected from WEFTEC 2014 in New Orleans with three pieces of news, including the launch of a new anaerobic digester…
Brussels to use MBR in water upgrade
Utility Société Bruxelloises de Gestion de l’Eau (SBGE), which manages Brussels’ water in Belgium, will install GE’s ZeeWeed 500D ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology.
As part of an upgrade to its existing wastewater treatment plant, they will treat one-third of the city's water – enough to serve over 400,000 Brussels residents.
Engineering, procurement and construction contractor CVN will convert the existing facility from a conventional treatment plant to one using MBR technology to meet new discharge limits.
Once completed, by the end of 2018, the upgraded wastewater treatment plant will treat an average of 66,000 m3/day. During peak usage times, it will be able to treat as much as 120,000 m3/day.
Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) targets industrial water
The company will be combing anaerobic digestion technology with its ZeeWeed 500 membranes to create anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR).
GE said its new technology has been designed for industrial wastewater with high biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand concentrations that result in higher aerobic treatment operational expenses.
The company claims that by combining anaerobic digestion and ZeeWeed membrane technology, it has “solved the issues associated with traditional anaerobic processes”. It said these include: as lesser effluent quality, process sensitivity, slow biomass growth rate, difficulty retaining methanogens and long-time or difficult-to-settle sludge.
GE’s AnMBR separates solids retention time from hydraulic retention time for a more robust biological process, retaining methanogens in anaerobic reactor, increasing methane production with no suspended solids in permeate and improving final effluent quality.
GE and PurposeEnergy to combine technologies
In a third announcement, GE said it will be collaborating its bioreactor (AnMBR) technology with PurposeEnergy’s Tribrid-Bioreactor with the aim of reusing industrial wastewater while also turning waste into energy.
PurposeEnergy’s Tribrid-Bioreactor is an anaerobic digester engineered for food and beverage industry by-products. It converts organic waste into clean water and energy, separating hydraulic retention time from solids retention time.
GE said the result is greater than 99% reduction in organic load for not only wastewater, but also for solids and slurries that are generated during food and beverage manufacturing.
