In light of Australia becoming one of its largest exporters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world, water management firm Metito has secured further contracts with engineering, procurement and construction management firm Bechtel International.
The two new projects will see Metito design, build and supervise the installation of seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants and sewage treatment plants to be used for construction sites at LNG plants.
Both projects are located on Curtis Island, near Gladstone in Queensland, Australia. Bechtel is constructing three separate LNG plants on the island which liquefy coal seam gas ready for export for two customers – GLNG (Santos, Petronas, Total and Kogas) and Australia Pacific LNG (Conocophillips, Origin and Sinopec).
The specification required these plants to meet challenging feed water quality and very strict discharge limits. Moreover, to meet the needs for the construction schedule, construction water and sewage treatment plants were fast-tracked.
This was followed by the supply of demineralization systems using reverse osmosis and electrodeionization for Australia Pacific LNG, as well as oily waste treatment systems for GLNG. The demineralized water is used for the Acid Gas Reduction Unit (AGRU) and turbine wash.
Several years ago, Metito entered the Australian market supplying similar equipment for the Darwin LNG project, on the Northwest coast.
Earlier this year Metito secured a contract worth US$9 million to upgrade a wastewater treatment plant in Iraq (see Water & Wastewater International story).
