LOS ANGELES, FEBRUARY 15, 2017 -- LA Sanitation received three 2017 National Environmental Achievement Awards (NEAA) on Monday February 6th during NACWA's 2017 Winter Conference. These prestigious national awards were granted for three different LA Sanitation environmental projects.
LASAN's Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) Expansion Projectreceived the Research & Technology Award. The Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant AWPF Expansion Project doubles the capacity of recycled water produced at the Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant from 6 million gallons per day to 12 million gallons per day. Recycled water produced at the plant is used to prevent seawater intrusion into ground water supplies at the Dominguez Gap, as well as for industrial use and to replace water lost to evaporation at Machado Lake.
LASAN received theOperations & Environmental Performance Award for the Avalon Green Alley Network, where abandoned and trash-filled alleys were redeveloped with permeable pavement and native plants into a network of Green Alleys designed to recapture storm water and prevent flooding.
LASAN also received the Public Information & Education Award for the Guide to Green Chemistry & Educational Webinar Series. This series promotes sustainable chemical practices nationwide, and builds a nationwide collaborative network of green chemistry experts, pollution prevention professionals, public works agencies and educational institutions.
