Wastewater infrastructure to get $281 million in Kuwait

With the country struggling to keep up with a growing population and increased demand for sanitation services, Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works is expected to invest US$281 million to expand wastewater projects in the country.

Ooska news reported that the first project to be addressed will be a control and monitoring center at Al Aridiya sewage treatment plant, costing some $57.5 million.

Other investments are reported to include a $131 million effort to upgrade wastewaterpipeline networks at Al Aqila Sewage Treatment Plant and a $50.5 million USD project to build and operate treated water reservoirs in multiple areas, including Sabhan, Subah al Salem, al Qosour, Mubarak al Kabir and Abu Fatira areas.

While Kuwait’s wastewater investment is catching up with its population, it has been more progressive in its industrial water reuse.

The EQUATE Petrochemical Company successfully piloted a water reuse project involving reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes (see WWi story).

The capital expenditure budget Kuwait’s water and wastewater between 2013-2016 is $4.4 billion USD, according to Ooska.
