ALEXANDIRA, Va. — WateReuse Executive Director Melissa Meeker talks about importance of reclaimed water in an editorial in the New York Times called Room for Debate.

ALEXANDIRA, Va. — Water Reuse is a critical component of solving the water crisis in the American West, and can play a key role in ensuring water sustainability across the country and around the world, according to a newly published New York Times editorial by WateReuse Executive Director Melissa Meeker.

Recycled or reclaimed water is water that is used more than one time before it passes back into the natural water cycle, noted the article.

“In the face of global water supply shortages, recycled water has the potential to help us be more climate-independent,” Meeker said in the editorial titled “Recycled Water is Crucial.”

The editorial was published in a Times forum called Room for Debate. In Room for Debate, The Times invites knowledgeable outside contributors to discuss news events and other timely issues. The topic of this debate is “The Water Crisis in the West.”

In her commentary, Meeker explains that proven technologies allow us to use recycled water for many different purposes to ensure a safe and sustainable water supply. She contends that reuse should be a part of the supply portfolio of every community, stated the article.
