WQA highlights water softener study for SepticSmart Week

LISLE, Ill. — The study indicated that efficient water softeners can improve septic tank performance.

LISLE, Ill. — The Water Quality Association (WQA) is highlighting a recent independent study on water softeners by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) first SepticSmart Week, Sept. 23-27, according to a press release.

Commissioned by the Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF), the 18-month study began in 2012 and demonstrated that "efficiently operated water softeners improve septic tank performance, while the use of very inefficient home softeners may have a negative effect on solids discharge," according to the release.

Demand-initiated regeneration unit softeners are efficient in the amount of salt and water used, continued the release, which can improve septic tank health.
