DENVER — The tool helps wastewater utilities develop and implement the ten key attributes of effective utility management.

DENVER — The Water Research Foundation (WRF) has released a new tool to help water and wastewater utilities develop and implement the ten key attributes for effective utility management (EUM), according to a press release.

"Performance Benchmarking for Effectively Managed Water Utilities" is a practical tool to help water and wastewater utilities conduct assessments and strategically develop key organizational attributes to meet specific goals, the release reported.

“The Water Research Foundation recognized that water utilities were compelled to work towards more effective utility management, but could benefit from detailed guidance on the implementation of more sustainable methods of operation,” said Robert Renner, executive director of WRF. “Project resources provide utilities direction as to the important practice areas that can support effective utility management and a structured process to track performance.”

The free resources include an Excel-based tracking tool with a user’s guide and a guidance document to help utilities meet EUM goals, noted the release, and a free Webcast presenting the project results and resources will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 3 p.m.

According to the release, the "Ten Attributes of Effectively Managed Water Sector Utilities," was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and several North American organizations in 2007, and WRF's new resources are meant to help utilities overcome the common gaps that hamper implementation of these attributes.
