Death of worker at wastewater treatment plant results in fines by TOSHA

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) handed out proposed penalties totaling $24,000.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA), who was investigating the incident involving the death of a worker at the wastewater treatment plant in Knoxville, Tenn., handed out proposed penalties totaling $24,000, according to the Knoxville News.

On December 31, 2012 a construction worker at the Kuwahee Wastewater Treatment plant on Neyland Drive was holding stabilizing cables when a crane struck overhead power lines, stated the article.  

The resulting shock eventually sent the worker, who was there temporarily, to his death.

A report from TOSHA shows that W and O Construction Company Inc. had committed 10 serious safety infractions that factored into the man’s death, noted the article.

Some of the violations include the failure to have employees trained on grounding equipment, failure to have power cut to electrical lines and a lack of training for employees regarding power lines.
