Barcelona selects Veolia for drinking water services

The Metropolitan Council of Barcelona has selected Veolia as the winning bidder for the €1 billion, 25-year tender for the management of essential drinking water services across eight municipalities in the Barcelona metropolitan area, serving more than 230,000 residents.
Among the planned improvements are a new sensor system for detecting leaks in the network, the implementation of new digitized operations centers, the modernization of the meter stock, installation of remote meter reading equipment, and electrification of the vehicle fleet, among others.
These actions, along with the rest included in the tender specifications, are essential for the service and indispensable to provide water security to these municipalities, especially after the episodes of severe drought that the region has experienced in recent years. Veolia will immediately start work.
The proposed ranking of bids, announced yesterday by the AMB and at the recommendation of the Procurement Committee, following its plenary session, is a standard step in the procedure and precedes the final award of the service contract.
Veolia is targeting more than 40% growth in Spain by the end of the decade. Building on its leadership in water, the company plans to invest €1 billion in the country by 2030 across water and other strategic activities including plastics recycling and energy recovery from waste.
