CORK, IRELAND, Feb. 19, 2015 -- In its new insight report, "Ion Exchange Resin Market and Technology Overview," Blue-Tech Research, an organization that maps and analyzes the water technology innovation landscape, has provided its overview of the $600-million global market for ion-exchange resins. The report provides detailed analysis of U.S. market share data for supplies.

Ion exchange is a well-established water treatment technology, primarily used for industrial purposes, such as simple softening, production of ultrapure water, sweetener purification, and metal recovery in mining. Water passes around the resin beads, which trap and release ions, changing the composition of the water.

Recent shifts in market dynamics have increased competition from membrane technologies, such as reverse osmosis, while growing costs for disposing of waste brines from the ion-exchange process are resulting in erosion of market share in some sectors. The report describes why, despite this, the global resin market is growing and in which sectors.

The market segments were also rated based on their attractiveness for companies considering supplying ion-exchange resins, with sectors such as potable drinking water, ultrapure water and energy production considered most attractive due to the large size, reasonable margins and low technical barrier to entry (though significant enough to prevent commodity suppliers).
