Water treatment plants required at Quezon City markets

Dec. 4, 2013

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The treatment plants will prevent waste such as fish scales and meat scraps from entering groundwater.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Quezon City council has passed an ordinance requiring public and private marketplaces to install and operate sewage treatment plants as a prerequisite to gaining or renewing an operating permit, according to an article from Inquirer News.

Wastes from markets such as fish scales, innards, bones, blood, meat scraps, grime and dirty water can end up in creeks and rivers if discharged untreated, the article reported.

“There is an imminent danger to the health of our people and there is a need to mandate the installation of sewage treatment plant[s] for markets whether private or public, to substantially reduce disease-causing microorganisms in the water discharged back into the environment,” the ordinance stressed.

There are currently 11 public markets and a number of privately owned markets in Quezon City, noted the article.
