Nextteq has released the Gastec Sulfide Ion Detector Tube no. 211. This tube provides a method for detecting sulfide ion levels in a solution. In just 2 to 3 minutes, direct-reading tubes produce a quantitative color-stain that quickly pinpoints problem areas. The calibration scale, printed directly on each tube, provides on-the-spot results that are easy to read. Unlike the traditional methyl-blue testing method, no color comparison chart is needed to help determine the results.

The Miex® magnetic ion exchange resin, offered by WesTech, is designed for the removal of dissolved organic carbon. The system can be used for reduction of disinfection by-products, including tri-halomethane generation in conventional treatment plants. The resin is also effective in reducing TOC fouling on RO Systems. This extends the life of membranes by lessening the frequency of chemical cleanings required to restore membrane efficiency. The system provides continuous ion exchange in contrast to the packed column type batch units, resulting in no plugging, and a constant high quality water supply.

The Grit King®, Hydro International's hydrodynamic vortex separator, is capable of removing fine grit and settleable solids from various waste streams. Since the separator operates through an all hydraulic process, it requires no external energy or moving parts, making it virtually maintenance free. It offers typical removal efficiencies of 95% of all particles equal to or greater than 150 microns with a SG of 2.65. Depending on the flow to be treated, the unit can be configured in either an above grade, freestanding system or in situ, allowing for larger diameters and greater throughput. Systems have been designed for flow ranges from 0.25 mgd up to 120 mgd. In addition, valving, grit classifiers, grit pumps and PLC based control systems for SCADA interface are available to provide a comprehensive grit removal package.

Filter cartridges

Pall Corp. has introduced Magnum™ Series High Capacity filter cartridges. These large, six-inch diameter absolute rated filter cartridges are designed to allow current bag filter users to upgrade to cartridge level performance with no change in hardware, since the new filters readily retrofit most existing size 1 and size 2 bag housings and baskets. The key is a patent pending sliding flange that adjusts the filter length to fit the current basket. Like bag filters, the new elements are designed to accept fluid flow from the inside to the outside of the filter. This feature allows all captured contaminant to remain trapped inside the filter thus preventing that contaminant from dropping into the clean side of the housing during change out. The new filters are suited to many applications involving water filtration including pre-RO, RO make-up water, boiler feed water, industrial water reclamation, and surface water pretreatment.

Arsenic removal

Media G2® from ADI Environmental is an iron-based adsorption filter media, certified to ANSI/NSF 61 for drinking water applications. The media removes arsenic from 1200 ppb to less than 2 ppb. The process is completely pressurized (no settling basins, and therefore no re-pumping required). The media can be regenerated 4 to 5 times - in-situ, in a process which takes only a few hours. All residuals pass the standard TCLP test as non-hazardous. Systems are available in capacities ranging from 50 to 5000 gpm.

The Container Filter from Flo Trend Systems is a one-step method for separating and dewatering sludge, slurries and waste streams. Various applications include dewatering grit and bar screenings; street and storm lift station waste; as well as wastewater treatment plant waste streams. The simple design consists of the container, porous support plates and a filter media. The space between the support plates, the container walls and the floor is the drainage field for the liquid. Outlets on the bottom and side walls of the container allow for gravity drainage or pump suction of liquid from the filter. Available models include Roll-Off, Luggers, Self Dumping Hoppers, as well as Front, Rear and Side Loaders.

Analytical Technology has released a new particle monitoring system designed to provide filter effluent measurements for water systems. The C10/77 Sensor is a laser based system that counts and displays particles at 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 200 microns in size. An LED display on the front of the counter allows operators to view the current counts at any size, and also to display differential counts for adjacent size channels. The counter is ideal for continuously monitoring the outlet of filter systems to detect spikes in particle levels that indicate filter problems. The instrument can be adapted to a variety of filter systems, and provides higher sensitivity than conventional turbidity measurement.

RO membranes

Koch membrane Systems offers its Fluid System™ products to reduce arsenic in drinking water. The TFC®-ULP® reverse osmosis membranes have undergone verification tests for arsenic removal. In laboratory testing, feedwater concentrations of 32 µg/L Arsenic V was reduced to an average level of 0.8 µg/L. Similarly, arsenic III was also rejected by the membranes, reducing the average feedwater level from 8 µg/L to 0.6 µg/L in the permeate. Dissolved arsenic, which represented 70 percent of the total arsenic, was reduced by 97 percent.

The Schreiber Fuzzy Filter® is a compressible media filter for water and wastewater treatment systems. It is compact, modular and easily adaptable for numerous applications, such as tertiary filtration or prefiltration before other systems such as membranes. The square configuration, operating in an upflow design, achieves a high rate of solids removal through the use of synthetic fiber spheres. Because the filter media is compressible, the total porosity of the filter bed can be altered to suit influent characteristics by mechanically compressing the media. These features permit hydraulic loadings of 30 gpm/ft2 of media and greater.
