Welcome to the July/August edition of Industrial WaterWorld. Our feature article this month highlights a few technologies helping food and beverage facilities efficiently manage their water and wastewater processes. From cow water to winery effluent, these technologies prove that efficient water management isn’t one size fits all. Turn to page 10 to read Alanna Maya’s full roundup.

As the dog days of summer begin to give way to the chilly mornings of autumn, it can only mean one thing: WEFTEC is right around the corner. In anticipation of the biggest water quality event in North America, we are excited to bring you our annual preview of what to expect at the show. Turn to page 12 for event highlights, followed by a compilation of products and services from companies exhibiting at WEFTEC 2019.

A coal-fired power plant in the United States needed to treat well water commingled with FGD wastewater. To minimize the size of the downstream thermal system, the plant planned to build a ZLD facility to pre-concentrate the commingled water. Working with Veolia Water Technologies, the plant conducted a pilot study to evaluate the performance of reverse osmosis in the pre-concentration step. John Korpiel explains further on page 20.

Meeting final coal ash remediation requirements carries with it a cost and compliance burden. The final testing stage, where TSS levels must consistently meet discharge limits, poses a particular challenge as the lag time between tests and results equals risk. However, as you’ll discover on page 24, some coal-fired power plants have begun adopting advanced sensor technology to measure real-time TSS to verify their discharge water is meeting specified requirements.

At the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the West Co-Gen Plant produces steam for some 50 buildings as well as chilled water for the west campus and university hospital. Over the last decade, UIC has made a lot of progress toward improving water/steam chemistry. Turn to page 34 to learn about some of these advancements, including modernizing treatment and chemistry control for makeup water, steam generation, and condensate return.
