Water Connections: Let’s Brew Together!

Feb. 18, 2020
Burkert has partnered with craft breweries for more than a decade to be the preferred supplier and the best in fluid handling.

The craft brewing landscape is full of people who really love beer, those who thrive in the inclusive, collaborative world that flourishes amid the delicate balance between art and science. At Burkert, we are just as passionate about automation in the brew house, fermentation cellar, online presence, and even the front of house! As one of the first valve and instrumentation providers to begin partnering directly with craft brewers and builders, Burkert firmly believes that this community should be respected and supported with a level of technology that is worthy of the heart and soul that goes into the craft.

The craft brewing industry has seen massive system scale-up, a market demand for consistency and repeatability, regulatory reduction of water waste, and water quality monitoring requirements — not really the fun parts of the brewing process. Partnering with brewers over the past few years, Burkert has developed a number of innovative, forward-thinking solutions for our customers globally via our international Systemhaus network of experts. We engineer, manufacture, design, refine, and invent not only the technology but the communication platform that facilitates how it all works together — and that makes life easier for the end user as you grow and expand to serve a massively emergent demand.

Working directly with craft brewers from around the globe to solve problems specific to their brewing applications, we have designed a collection of scalable, modular subassembly systems specifically for the industry. Just a few examples are cellar controls packages, sparge water controls, wort aeration, brew house systems, source water makeup systems, neutralization systems, and steam control systems.

All of these systems can be provided in any format, size, and scale, depending on the process needs. The current Burkert automation technology portfolio comprises the following platforms and protocols, just to name a few: Ethernet/IP, Modbus/TCP, ProfiNET, EtherCAT, ET 200S, CANopen, AS-I 3.0, IO Link, ProfiBUS DPV2, Phoenix Inline, DeviceNET, Point I/O, ET 200SP, ET 200HA, and Wago System 750.

Our most recent innovation allows our customers to “live tap” into either the processor of the process variable or control element via our EDIP platform. This gives unheard of advantages for our customers both today and for years to come, allowing for successive process improvements and upgrades, all with the existing hardware already in-place.
