CustoMem wins European Commission grant to bring biomaterial product to market

CustoMem, founded in 2015 by two Imperial College London graduates, Henrik Hagemann and Gabi Santosa, received a substantial €1.4m (£1.24m) grant. The award will enable the company to bring to market its next generation granular media, optimized to capture and recycle specific challenging micropollutants found in industrial wastewater. CustoMem created CGM (CustoMem Granular Media) — a novel bio-adsorbent that can selectively capture micropollutants, like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), from wastewater in standard steel tank processing equipment. It provides significant cost savings to customers compared with traditional adsorbent materials such as anion-exchange media and granular activated carbon. CGM can be chemically regenerated using a nonhazardous proprietary wash whereby the captured pollutants are removed and safely disposed of or repurposed. Crucially, CGM’s optimized performance allows faster flow rates and saves floor space, utilizing up to four times less plant footprint than activated carbon solutions. CGM is targeted for use at commercial airports, petrochemical plants and navy and air force bases to treat industrial wastewater.

The award is funded through the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument, part of the European Innovation Council.

Crystal IS achieves ISO 9001:2015 certification

Crystal IS achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification for its operations and processes implemented for the production of its high-performance UVC LEDs. ISO 9001, a global standard for best practices in quality management, requires that an organization maintain specific levels of quality while also pursuing continuous, systematic improvement of the company’s processes. The latest standard, ISO 9001:2015, places a greater emphasis on a company’s use of risk analysis to anticipate challenges in managing business processes. It also requires organizations to be aware of and anticipate the needs of company stakeholders including employees, shareholders and customers in the development of future products. Crystal IS, previously certified to the ISO 9001:2008 standard, achieved the ISO 9001:2015 certification after the annual external audit of its systems and processes.

QED Environmental Systems announces in-house machining

Q.E.D. Environmental Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Graco Inc., announced its new in-house machining capabilities. QED will now machine parts for approximately 90 percent of its finished goods, allowing it to monitor every step of the manufacturing process from incoming material to the final product, which leads to more efficient manufacturing and ultimately, better quality products. Products affected by this change range from Autopumps and wellheads to groundwater and soil sampling solutions. QED added skilled individuals to its new machining department, which will allow QED to fully utilize its new machining capabilities.
